Take your time

It’s looking like I’m going to post approximately every six months, whether I have anything to say or not.

It’s the last day of the year and I have spent many years doing the Janus thing about now: looking back and looking forward. I could do that today, too, but I’m not in the mood.

This has been a pretty good year for me, as years go. Not perfect, of course. No such thing in this life. But 2018 was a pretty good year. I got things done. I moved forward.

To be honest, though, I’m a lot more interested in the year I have ahead of me.

The year will start with the last of my major grant applications being submitted.

Right after that, I’ll be distributing documents before my comprehensive exams. I hope to have to hose done by mid-February. That is insanely early as these exams go because it’ll take away any additional reading I might do this semester. But I just want to get this done and out of the way early, so I can relax during the rest of the semester.

Well, not really relax. I’m going to be starting some of my research during the semester. Another reason why I want to be ABD fairly early. I already have the green light from the Institutional Review Board for this research. Once I’m ABD, the only thing I’ll be missing will be money.

Then I have reason to be hopeful about getting a teaching job this summer. I’m really excited about it because it involves teaching young people to love reading. I’m also rather thrilled at the prospect of being able to pay my bills this summer without having to exhaust myself doing rideshare driving. What a relief!

I shouldn’t count my chickens but the signs are propitious.

I’ll spend the first months of the semester in Chapel Hill fulfilling my responsibilities as Graduate Teaching Consultant. Then, over Labor Day Weekend, I’ll head to upstate New York to start the second phase of my research. I’ll be there until at least mid-November. IF I’m not done by then, I’ll go back up there for a few more weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

By the end of the year, I’ll have most of my research done! And my hooding will be about 18 months away by then.

Oh, yeah, 2019 will be a good year. It’ll be busy but I’ll get a lot done and will have moved ever so much closer to my current goal.[

I’m pumped.
